Fun with Jekyll
An early morning “warmup” before the workday: Playing around with the unreleased Jekyll Minima theme update
Using the Unreleased Minima 3.0 Theme
Minima has been Jekyll’s default theme for many years. Back in 2020, a new version of the theme was created but not officially released, although the source files and configuration instructions are available on Github.
The Minima version that comes bundled with Jekyll is still 2.5. Using 3.0 and its new features requires some extra configuration in your YAML file and Gemfile, plus a bundle install/update via the command line.
Enabling Dark Mode
After some Google searching early this morning, I was delighted to find these two workarounds for enabling the new version and its dark mode:
Customizing CSS
Settings for CSS overrides have changed with the 3.0 update and are ridiculously easy to implement. Info is available in the Github repo above.
Tutorial Coming Soon
I was thrilled to get the dark mode to work and add a few CSS customizations—there is such a wealth of knowledge out there.
This is about all I had time for this morning; I’m working on a longer tutorial for the above.
